The development of laser- and beam-driven plasma accelerators as an experimental field
نویسنده
چکیده
Since its inception in the early 1980s, the field of plasma-based particle accelerators has made remarkable advances. Robust plasma accelerating structures can now be excited over centimeter scales using short laser pulses and over meter scales using ultrarelativistic particle beams. Accelerating fields in excess of tens of GV/m can be sustained over these lengths. Laser-driven plasma accelerators now routinely produce monoenergetic, low divergence electron beams in the 100 MeV–1 GeV range, whereas electron-beam driven plasma accelerators have demonstrated the ability to double the energy of 42 GeV electrons using a high-energy collider beam in less than one meter. The development of this field is traced through a series of path breaking experiments. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2721965

Nowadays, due to the high costs and large dimensions of the conventional proton accelerators, other optimal methods for producing the proton beam have been studied. Using of Laser-driven proton accelerators is one of the important and new methods. In laser-driven ion acceleration, a highly ultra-intense laser pulse interacts with solid density targets and will create a plasma media that will ac...

Directed laser beams provide a very useful way of concentrating energy efficiently. Using them for acceleration of particles however is challenging. An electron in an intense laser beam will behave much like a cork on water as a huge wave passes by-bobbing up and down on the wave but not really going anywhere. In 1979, Tajima and Dawson [1] solved the problem of how to transfer the laser beam e...
متن کاملPhoton Acceleration as the Laser Wakefield Diagnostic for Future Plasma Accelerators
In the near future, laser-plasma particle accelerators will be able to sustain electric fields in excess of 100 GeV/m, along plasma channels several Rayleigh lengths long. For these extreme conditions, present day laser wakefield diagnostics such as Frequency Domain Interferometry will not be able to resolve the wake field structure and determine the magnitude of the electric field. In this pap...

The physics of plasma-based accelerators driven by short-pulse lasers is reviewed. This includes the laser wakefield accelerator, the plasma beat wave accelerator, the self-modulated laser wakefield accelerator, and plasma waves driven by multiple laser pulses. The properties of linear and nonlinear plasma waves are discussed, as well as electron acceleration in plasma waves. Methods for inject...
